Karakoram

Karakoram er ei fjellkjede i grenseområdet mellom Pakistan, Kina og India, meir spesifikt i regionane Gilgit, Ladakh og Baltistan. Ho er ei av dei største fjellkjedene i Asia, og blir oftast rekna som ein del av Himalaya. Karakoram husar mange spektakulære og høge fjell, som K2, Masherbrum, Gasherbrum-gruppa, Muztagh og Trango-massivet. Kjeda har over seksti toppar som er høgare enn 7000 meter.


Karakoram-kjeda er om lag 500 kilometer vid, og er det området i verda utanom polarområda som har størst innhald av isbrear.


Karakoram tyder «svart grus» på tyrkisk. Mange av breane er dekte av grus og slam.
