Gaeltachtområde på Irland


Gaeltacht (uttalt /ˈgeːɫ̪t̪ˠəxt̪ˠ/; fleirtalsform Gaeltachtaí) er eit irsk ord for eit irskspråkleg område. I Irland refererer Gaeltacht, eller An Ghaeltacht, til dei regionane i landet der irsk er offisielt hovudspråk. I Gaeltacht blir irsk snakka som daglegspråk av større eller mindre delar av innbyggjarane. Desse delane av Irland vart peikt ut tidleg etter det irske sjølvstendet, som del av regjeringa sin politikk for å revitalisere irsk. Grensene for Gaeltacht har vorte endra ein gong, då Clochán-Bréanann i Kerry og delar av West Muskerry, i Cork vart lagt til Gaeltacht i 1974. I dei fleste Gaeltachtområda er dei irsktalande i mindretal.


Folketalet i Gaeltacht er i dag omtreht 85 000, dei fleste irsktalande bur i vest, i Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry, og Cork. Det finst små lommer av irsktalande i Waterford i sør og i Meath i aust.
