Gigabyte


Gigabyte (utt. GIgabajt, forkorta GB) er ei måleeining for datamengder. Ein gigabyte er 1 024 • 1 024 • 1 024 = 1 073 741 824 byte, eller 1 024 megabyte. Dét er nok til å lagra ein symfoni med hifi-lyd eller ein heil spelefilm for fjernsyn.



Gibibyte eller gigabyte? |


IKT-verda bruker prefiksa kilo-, mega-, giga- og tera- annleis enn SI. Dette skapar iblant forvirring. Difor har ordet gibibyte blitt foreslått som nytt namn på gigabyte, for å gjera prefikset giga- eintydig att (éin gigabyte vil då verta 1 000 000 000 byte), men dette har ikkje blitt mykje brukt i praksis.
