Atoll




Danninga av ein atoll. Korallrev veks rundt ein vulkan som gradvis blir slitt ned.


Ein atoll er eit rundt, lågt korallrev som normalt omkransar ein lagune og dannar ei øy.




Atollen Nukuoro i Mikronesiaføderasjonen.


Denne typen øyar reiser seg opp frå havbotnen, ofte frå djupner på fleire tusen meter. Dei er særleg vanlege i Stillehavet, til dømes i Cookøyane, Bikiniøyane og Banaba.


Den største atollen i verda er Kiritimati på 388 km².[1]
