Somerfield er ein forstad sør i Christchurch på New Zealand.

Forstaden er avgrensa av Heathcote River, Strickland Street, Milton Street og Barrington Street. Skulane Christchurch South Intermediate og Somerfield School, Somerfield Park og ei rekkje forretningar ligg i Somerfield. Bydelen er kjend for å ha ein stor variasjon av treslag, særleg langs Heathcote River.



Etymologi |


Den newzealandske politikaren Richard Packer (1794—1872) var representant i Parlamentet på New Zealand frå 1858-1859 for elektoratet Town of Christchurch. Han åtte 170 000 m² land i sørenden av Colombo Street. Der sette han opp bustaden sin som han kalla Somerfield, etter fødestaden sin, Somerset i England. Son hans, Henry William Packer (1831–1890), utvida familien sitt landområde til 0,53 km². Namnet til bustaden deira vart seinare gjort til namn på denne forstaden[2][3].
