Waimakaririelva er den største av elvene nord i Canterbury-regionen, på Sørøya på New Zealand. Ho renn i 151 km i stort sett søraustleg retning frå Søralpane, gjennom slettene Canterbury Plains til Stillehavet[1].


Elva har utspringet sitt i dei austlege flankane av Søralpane, åtte km sørvest for Arthur's Pass. Gjennom ein stor del av det øvre løpet er elva forgreina med vide, sanddekte elvebreidder. Etter som ho nærmar seg Canterbury Plains, går ho gjennom eit fjellområde og vert pressa inn i eit trongt elvegjel (Waimakariri Gorge), før ho går attende til den forgreina forma der ho renn over slettene. Elva munnar til sist ut i Stillehavet nord for Christchurch, nær byen Kaiapoi.


Chinooklaks (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) vart innført frå California på 1900-talet og finst enno i elva.[2]


På maori har Waimakariri fleire tydingar, ei av dei er 'elva med kaldt, fossande vatn'.[1]
På 1850-talet gav europeiske nybyggjarar elva namnet Courtenay River, men dette gjekk ut av bruk.[3]


Geologiske granskingar tyder på at elvemunningen har flytta svært mykje på seg. Til tider har elva runne i det løpet ho har no gjennom Christchurch, og til og med runne ut i Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora sør for Bankshalvøya i ein periode.[4]


I staden for å vera ubygd statleg land, slik dei fleste av elvebreiddene på New Zealand er, er breiddene til Waimakariri River underlagt administrasjonen til Canterbury Regional Council.[5]


I Canterbury vert elva stort sett omtala som «The Waimak».[1]



Utbygging |


I 1923 vart elva undersøkt med tanke på å byggja ein dam for å gje hydroelektrisk kraft til Christchurch. Dette fekk støtte frå lokalsamfunna, men dammen vart aldri bygd etter som staten tilbaud rimeleg straum frå anlegget ved Coleridgesjøen.[6]
