Geografi |


Bydelen er dominert av nærleiken til vegtunnelen Lyttelton road tunnel, ei stor trafikkåre som går gjennom Port Hills. Vegen er ein del av riksveg State Highway 74. Jarnvegslinja Main South Railway line går gjennom forstaden før ho når Lyttelton rail tunnel som fører til hamna i Lyttelton.


Forstaden ligg ved foten av dei bratte vulkanske knausane som dannar den nordlege kanten av åsane, om lag åtte kilometer søraust for bysentrum. Frå Heathcote Valley startar også gondolbanen Christchurch Gondola, som går opp til Mount Cavendish på Port Hills. Gondolbanen opna offisielt den 24. november 1992[2]. Banen er for tida stengd etter jordskjelva i 2011, og er venta opna att i siste halvår av 2012[3].



Historie |


Heathcote Valley har ei lang historie med produksjon av malt, den siste verksemda var Canterbury Malting Company. Dei utrangerte fabrikkbygningane, som vart stengde i 1999, dominerer horisonten[4].



Relasjon til Heathcote River |


Trass i namnet ligg Heathcote Valley om lag to kilometer sør for Heathcote River, som ikkje renn gjennom forstaden, men over ei vid slette austover.



Namngjeving |


Forstaden har fått namn etter Sir William Heathcote, sekretær i Canterbury Association.
