Brennevinsfjorden




Brennevinsfjorden er fjorden på vestkysten av Laponiahalvøya.


Brennevinsfjorden er ein fjord på nordvestkysten av øya Nordaustlandet på Svalbard og er 22 km lang. Brennevinsfjorden er truleg den same fjorden som er teikna inn på Hendrick Doncker sitt kart frå 1663 som Brandewyns Bay.[1] Ein engelsk ekspedisjon oppførte hytta «Oxfordhuset» på Depotodden i Brennevinsfjorden i 1936. Hytta vert i dag eigd av den norske staten og er i god stand.


Dei yngste bergartane på Nordaustlandet er gangar av doleritt frå jura-krit i grunnfjellet på mellom anna Lågøya og i munningen av Brennevinsfjorden.[2]


Det var i Brennevinsfjorden at Roald Amundsen sin flyekspedisjon til Nordpolen naudlanda på tilbakevegen til Ny-Ålesund med flyet N-25. Staden fekk namnet Amundsenodden og området vart fekk namnet Dornier-Walflya. Amundsen og dei fem andre ekspedisjonsmedlemmane vart redda av selfangsskuta «Sjøliv» frå Balsfjord.[3].
