Horten er ein bykommune ved vestfoldskysten som ligg mellom Holmestrand i nord, og Tønsberg i sør.

Geografi |


Kommunen har rundt 40 km kystline mot Oslofjorden, med kyststi og fleire store friområde. Han inkluderer tettstadane Horten, Borre, Nykirke, Åsgårdstrand og Skoppum.


Kommunane Borre og Åsgårdstrand blei slått saman i 1965. Borre og Horten kommunar blei slått saman i 1988. Fram til 1. juni 2002 heitte kommunen Borre.



Historie |


Det er funne spor i kommunen etter busetjingar heilt tilbake til steinalderen. Borrehaugane ber vitne om at kommunen var eit maktsenter i vikingtida.


Frå 1582 var Horten ferjestad mellom Horten og Moss.


Byvåpenet til Horten var det fyrste byvåpenet kong Håkon VII godkjente. Det skjedde i 1907.



Kultur |



Utdanning |


Høgskolen i Vestfold ligg på Bakkenteigen, midtvegs mellom Åsgårdstrand og Horten by. Høgskolen har eit tett samarbeid med fleire av elektronikkbedriftene i kommunen, og med Befalsskulen for Sjøforsvaret som ligg i Horten by.



Kyrkjer |


Det finst fleire kyrkjer i kommunen, mellom anna Løvøykapellet frå mellomalderen og Horten kyrkje.



Idrett |


Fotballklubbane Ørn-Horten og Falk kjem frå Horten.
