Vinter-OL 1988 vart helde i Calgary i Canada. Sovjetunionen vart beste nasjon med 11 gull. Noreg tok heim 3 sølv- og 2 bronsemedaljar, men for fyrste gong i vinterleikane si historie vart det ingen norske gullmedaljar. Difor vert vinterleikane i Calgary dei dårlegaste i Noregs historie, og dei kandadiske resultata på heimebane var òg dårlege.
Med 1427 utøvarar frå 57 nasjonar var det det største Vinter-OL til da.
Norsk flaggberar under opningsseremonien var Oddvar Brå, som deltok på ski.

Bakgrunn |


Calgary prøvde først å få arrangere Vinter-OL i 1964, og igjen i 1968, men tapte begge gonger. Andre bud for å arrangere Vinter-OL i 1988 var Cortina d'Ampezzo i Italia, og Falun i Sverige. 30. september 1981 hadde Calgary sitt bud slått både Cortina d'Ampezzo og Falun, i høvesvis fyrste og andre runde.


Med den økonomiske fiaskoen frå Vinter-OL 1976 i Montreal, var fleire skeptiske til eit nytt Canada-OL, men da leikane var omme, hadde heile arrangementet gått i pluss, noko som framleis er unikt i olympisk samanheng.
