Atyrau (kasakhisk Атырау, tidlegare Gurijev) er ein by i Kasakhstan. Han er hovudstad i Atyrau oblast og ligg om lag 2 700 km vest for Almaty og 350 km aust for den russiske byen Astrakhan.



Geografi |


Atyrau er den største hamnebyen til Kasakhstan ved Kaspihavet og ligg ved elvedeltaet til Uralelva. Atyrau ligg om lag 20 meter under havnivå. Byen vert av mange rekna som ein by som ligg både i Asia og Europa, sidan han vert delt av Uralelva, som ofte vert rekna som grensa mellom Europa og Asia.



Historie |


Det vart bygd eit fort av tre ved elva Jaik, som var det tidlegare namnet på Uralelva, i 1645 med namnet Nizjnij Jaitzkij gorodok («Nedre Jaik fort») av den russiske handelsmannen Mikhajlo Gurijev, som opphavleg kom frå Jaroslavl. Han spesialiserte seg på handel med Khiva og Bukhara. Fortet vart plyndra av uralkosakkar og Gurijev-familien bygd fortet om i stein (1647-62). Tsar Aleksej I av Russland sende ein garnison av Streltsij for å verne fortet frå fleire åtak frå kosakkane. Trass i dette tok kosakken Stepan Razin byen i 1667 og 1668. Fortet vart gradvis mindre viktig og vart fjerna i 1810. Mellom 1708 og 1992 heitte byen Gurijev.
