Keisar av India


Keisar eller keisarinne av India er ein tittel som dei britiske monarkane hadde mellom 1877 og 1947.

Den første som nytta tittelen var Victoria av Storbritannia, som tok han i bruk frå 1877 tittelen Empress of India. Tittelen kom til nokre år etter at britisk India vart ein del av det britiske imperiet. Britiskokkupert India vart utgjort av India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, og Burma. Burma vart ein eigen koloni i 1937.


Victoria skal ha ynskt seg tittelen på grunn av keisartittelen til Wilhelm I av Tyskland og tsartittelen til Alexander II av Russland. Den britiske statsministeren, Benjamin Disraeli, er rekna å ha vore den som sette opp tittelen for henne.

Då Edvard VII kom på trona, vart tittelen Emperor of India (keisar av India) nytta. Tittelen vart nytta fram til India og Pakistan vann sjølvstende frå Storbritannia ved midnatt mellom 14. og 15. august 1947. Tittelen vart formelt gjeven avkall på av kong Georg VI av Storbritannia.
